Is Anxiety More Prevalent Today?
Why does it seem like more people have anxiety today, than even just 10 years ago? While anxiety is not “new”, many people have observed a significant increase in anxiety levels among individuals of all ages. Naturally, this raises questions. Let’s discuss some of the factors that are contributing to the idea that anxiety is more common today than in the past. Here is a brief list of the three most significant factors.
Awareness
One of the most significant reasons behind this supposed increase in anxiety, is the increase in awareness. Mental health issues have long been stigmatized and misunderstood, which, in the past, resulted in most people suffering in silence. Now, thanks to more advocacy and education on mental health, people are more informed and are more likely to seek help. This increased awareness translates into higher reported rates of anxiety, as individuals recognize their symptoms and pursue treatment.
Social Media
Another factor that has largely impacted our society is social media. Social media has changed the way we interact with others and share information. Social media has shown to both help and hinder mental health. While it offers opportunities for connection, it can also contribute to anxiety.
It is easier for others to share their personal experiences, in turn spreading awareness on topics such as anxiety, depression, and other mental illness. On the other hand, the constant exposure to others’ lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and increased pressure to meet societal expectations.
Online Bullying
The prevalence of online bullying and harassment further exacerbates feelings of anxiety. Younger populations are particularly more vulnerable to these dynamics. In the past, if children were bullied at school, they had the opportunity to get away from it once they were home. Now, because of social media and cell phones, the bullying can follow them wherever they go.
There are many other contributing factors, but these are the most impactful. If you, or someone you know are experiencing anxiety, feel free to reach out to us for questions!
